About

free-spirited, wholesome cooking from a comfy home

Welcome to my blog where I share recipes from my home kitchen. This is a newborn (2024) baby blog and I’m so glad you’re visiting!

Here’s what you can find at hellen’s house:

  • Creative and curious fusion cooking
  • A preference for whole foods
  • Mostly vegetarian and vegan or adaptable recipes
    • Instead of vegetarian options for meat based recipes, my default is vegetarian recipes with the occasional option of adding meat
  • A focus on protein
  • Kitchen experiments
  • Cat cameos

about me

I’m based in a Greater Toronto Area suburb, a culturally diverse place with access to all kinds of food. One of my favourite past times is to browse our local ethnic grocery stores for ingredients I’ve never tasted and to cook with them intuitively. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t!

I love learning about global cultures through cuisine. I want to taste all the dishes around the world, both famous and obscure.

Aside from Toronto, I’ve resided or had long stopovers (~3 months) in the following cities: Beijing, Vancouver, Taipei, Kyoto, Shanghai.

Our home is resident to two humans and two sweet cats: Monica (“maobumao”) and Betty (“BB”). These days, they can mostly be found lounging on the heating blanket.

I’m a strength athlete (Olympic weightlifting) and train 5+ days a week – hence the focus on protein and whole foods.

I always keep in mind the practical (effort<reward scale) and nutritious value when developing recipes.

thank you for being here
